Lawmakers Seek To Prevent Pedestrian Deaths

There’s nothing like enjoying the comfort of a leisurely walk in Mount Laurel, New Jersey; however, being out on foot proved deadly for far too many people in 2020. Now, some legislators are working to introduce a bill that will rate pedestrian safety for vehicles.

While numbers are still being calculated, the Governors Highway Safety Association has already predicted that 2020 was one of the most deadly years yet for those walking to reach their destination. Although Corona had more people at home and off the highway, pedestrian deaths from vehicles had risen up 4.8 percent.

The goal of SB 4307

A New York State Senate is now working to increase awareness of pedestrian safety through a bill called SB 4307. SB 4307 would make it a law that all vehicles would need to be scored on a 1-5 scale according to their pedestrian safety levels. Larger vehicles such as SUVs and trucks would likely pose a greater threat to the safety for those walking, thus resulting in a worse score. Scores would be posted online and, if one lived in the state of New York, they could expect to buy vehicles with the displayed scores. While SB 4307 couldn’t put a stop to pedestrian deaths, it could make drivers more aware of how their vehicles could harm those walking.

What to do if you were an injured pedestrian

If you were a pedestrian who was hurt in a motor vehicle collision, you understand exactly how important safety measures are. While bills such as SB 4307 may help drivers in the future, you need to do something to get compensation for the injuries you’ve already endured. An attorney can help you to get the money you deserve for the trauma and expense that you are suffering through.

Pedestrian deaths have been more frequent than ever. Thankfully, lawmakers are finally seeing the need for greater pedestrian safety measures. If you’ve been injured, realize that you have people on your side and be willing to pursue the compensation you deserve!
