Decreasing Your Risk Of An Accident In The Fall

Driving through New Jersey can be a beautiful experience during the fall months as the leaves begin to change colors and the weather gets cooler. However, this can also be a time when there is an increase in the number of traffic accidents due to less daylight, animals that are looking for food, and various weather conditions. Here are some tips to stay safe during this time of the year.

Leaves

Although looking at the foliage in the fall is often breathtaking, you might encounter difficulties while driving on roads that are covered with leaves. If they are wet, then leaves on the road can sometimes lead to motor vehicle accidents due to not being able to see potholes or objects on the road or sliding over the leaves and veering into oncoming traffic or onto the side of the road.

Animals

Another tip to keep in mind is to look out for animals, especially deer, as they can sometimes begin crossing roadways during their search for food and shelter for the winter months. If you happen to see an animal on the side of the road, try to slow down in order to safely make your way past the animal. If the animal tries to run across in front of your car, a slower rate of speed can sometimes decrease the severity of the impact if you happen to have a crash.

Daylight

While driving in the fall months, try to keep the headlights on your vehicle in proper working order since the sun typically goes down earlier during this time of the year. Since the sun goes down earlier, you can also increase your following distance as a way to decrease the risk of an accident.
