Ceremony Held To Honor Drunken Driving Accident Victims

The organization New Jersey Remembers recently held a dinner to commemorate those killed by drunk drivers and to honor the law enforcement officials responsible for enforcing laws against drunk driving in Trenton. At the ceremony, family members of alcohol-related accident victims testified about the lives of those lost and how the accident had impacted them. Police officers related how the death of a partner due to drunk driving gave them an insight that they never had before into how the accident impacts a person. Speakers also related that the penalties were now more severe than they were at the time of the accident, and how this serves as a deterrent to drunk driving. The speakers also related how organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) advocate for the victims and their families and work to spread awareness of the dangers of drunk driving. The ceremony itself was held to honor the police officers with the most DWI arrests by the Attorney General’s Office.

Drunk driving is a very present danger to motorists in the state of New Jersey. According to the state police over 152 people in the state were killed by drunk drivers in 2011, and not all of the intoxicated drivers were over the Blood Alcohol content (BAC) limit of .08. Police in New Jersey arrested over 7,400 people for DWI during the past year. Based on these numbers, drunk driving is a serious problem in New Jersey.

The ceremony also highlighted the work that the victim’s family members are doing in education and activism to prevent drunken driving accidents and to help those victimized. Several speakers had joined MADD and worked to educate the public about the dangers of drunk driving. This is a welcome measure to prevent DUI accidents and to care for those impacted by them.

Anyone impacted by a DUI accident is entitled to relief. They may seek monetary compensation in the form of damages from the defendant in a personal injury judgment. They may also be compensated for medical bills, lost wages, and for any disability incurred. Anyone victimized by an alcohol-related accident has the legal ability to seek prompt relief in the form of an appropriate compensation.
