Some common medical errors

Medical malpractice lawsuits don't need to show that a doctor or health care provider was purposeful or malicious in his or her mistake. Injuries occur due to medical mistakes even when good doctors and nurses are handling cases. Medical workers are human, which means they don't always perform to perfection. However, when an injury causes damages to a patient, that patient has a right to seek compensation.

One of the most common medical errors is a misdiagnosis. The number of possible conditions a person might have and the fact that many illnesses present with similar symptoms makes misdiagnosis possible. When someone is diagnosed incorrectly, they might receive treatment that causes further damage or the actual condition may worsen because it goes untreated.

Providing the wrong treatment or medication are other common errors. Patients can help reduce the risks of this error by informing medical staff of all current medications and treatment so conflicting meds aren't prescribed. You can also check pills provided by a pharmacy to ensure they match the size, shape and color of previous prescriptions for the same drug. If you do receive the wrong treatment or medication, then report the issue to medical staff as soon as you realize and consider discussing the scenario with a legal professional.

One error that is common enough to require policies from health care insurance companies is operating on the wrong body part or providing the wrong operation to a patient. This might occur when doctors misread medical notes or when information in the medical records is incorrect or mixed up. Help prevent such errors by speaking with doctors prior to surgeries to ensure everyone is on the same page. If you do face an injury due to medical error, then take time to understand your rights and what type of compensation you might seek.
