Wrongful Death Archives

Sister of murder victim sues private corrections operator

Recently, the sister of a 21-year-old Garfield woman who was allegedly murdered by an escapee from a halfway house filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the private company that operates the halfway house. The lawsuit alleges that the company acted with negligence in allowing the paroled inmate to escape and commit the alleged crime that resulted in the woman's wrongful death.

Wrongful death of the elderly an increasing problem

An increasingly common problem is the failure of hospitals to put a stop to mistreatment of elderly patients. This mistreatment can lead to the wrongful death of the elderly patient. Recently, a New Jersey woman discovered that her 93-year-old mother, a nursing home patient with Alzheimer's disease, had sustained injuries across her body. The woman's mother had broken her eye socket, cheekbone, wrist and jaw, and also had welts on her back and gashes on her left shin. The mother eventually died from her injuries. The hospital said that the mother slipped on powder in her bathroom and injured herself in a fall, but this was a claim that the daughter refused to accept. The daughter suspected abuse by the hospital's staff, but an investigation did not turn up any evidence.

Road rage causes fatal car accident in Washington Township

Accidents involving motor vehicles can vary a great deal in severity; some individuals walk away without a scrape, while others do not walk away at all. No matter the circumstances, the friends and family of fatal accident victims are deeply hurt by their loss, and in many cases, a crash is followed by a civil claim for damages.

Mount Laurel man fatally injured by car as he walked along road

Previously, we've discussed how negligence too often plays a role in personal injury and wrongful death. But sometimes the determination of fault in a fatal accident has to go beyond the initial police report. In fact, families in New Jersey sometimes have to seek help in accident reconstruction after the tragic death of a loved one. Such efforts aid victims' families in deciding whether a wrongful death claim is a viable option in the wake of a fatal accident.

Family of New Jersey woman says defective drink caused her death

Readers in the Mt. Laurel area will be saddened to hear of an elderly New Jersey woman who, according to a recent wrongful death claim, died from drinking the recommended dosage of an herbal health drink. The family of the 88-year-old said that for three months she consumed the supplement and suffered heart damage and kidney failure as a result.

Deadly crash kills a New Jersey motorcyclist

An accident can be an alarming and life-altering experience. Furthermore, because cars and motorcycles are fast and powerful machines, the consequence of even a simple accident can be deadly. Unfortunately, there are some negligent and careless drivers on the road, and accidents seem to happen all too often. Last weekend, a New Jersey man died after his motorbike was struck by a car on Route 94.

Train accident: personal injury claims life of Wrightstown man

Train accidents may not be very common in Burlington County, but when they do happen, they typically cause serious personal injury and even death. Recently, a 26-year old Wrightstown man was walking on train tracks near Florence when he was hit by a light-rail train. He suffered severe personal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene approximately 30 minutes later. No injuries were reported on-board the train, though service was halted for approximately two hours while the accident was investigated. Witnesses say the man may have been walking with someone else who was not on the tracks when the accident occurred. The investigation is ongoing.

Calls for grand jury investigation into death of 19-year-old

Though criminal activity is never excusable, neither is excessive force by the police. Laws are in place to prevent illegal actions by citizens and the authorities must respect the rights of criminals when they are taken into custody. If police officers step too far, they can fatally wound a criminal who does not necessarily pose a threat, bringing wrongful death suits upon themselves and the city they represent.

Family files wrongful death suit against College of New Jersey

It is hard to imagine much worse for a parent than receiving a call that their child has gone missing. Whether in Burlington County or anyplace in New Jersey, the immediate fear strikes the core of anyone's being. The first hope is that there was no personal injury, but when the agonizing hours turn into days, even the strongest hope can start to dwindle. And as a tragedy plays out, parents understandably want answers and fervently wish to hold the responsible parties accountable.
