Common hidden injuries after a car accident

On Behalf of | Jun 14, 2024 | Car Accidents

After an auto accident, many people feel fine. This makes them believe that medical treatment is unnecessary. However, many injuries may not show symptoms immediately.

Hidden injuries like these can develop over the next few hours or days. This is one reason why seeking medical evaluation after an accident is so important.

Here are some common hidden injuries to watch out for.

Whiplash

Most people have heard of whiplash, which is extremely common in car accidents. It is called “whiplash” because the collision causes the neck and head to move forward and backward quickly, in a whip-like manner. Symptoms of whiplash include a sore or stiff neck, dizziness, headaches and vision issues. Sometimes, whiplash symptoms do not appear for several days.

Concussion

Concussions are also common. These are TBIs (traumatic brain injuries) that can occur even if the head is not hit directly. Sometimes, a car accident can cause the person’s brain to move inside their skull. This is what causes a concussion.

Some of the symptoms associated with a concussion include:

  • Noise and light sensitivities
  • Dizziness
  • Mood or behavior changes
  • Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Nausea

Because these can be serious, you should seek medical attention immediately to prevent further issues.

Internal Injuries

Car accidents often cause internal injuries. This includes internal bleeding or damage to organs. Unfortunately, like the other injuries on this list, it can take time for symptoms to develop.

Without prompt medical treatment, internal injuries may be life-threatening.

Back Injuries

Like a person’s neck and head, their back is also prone to injuries in car accidents. A person may feel sore but think it is nothing serious. However, the pain may become worse as the hours and days pass.

Recognizing and addressing hidden injuries after a car accident is crucial for immediate and long-term health outcomes. Seeking medical attention promptly and following up with appropriate care can significantly impact recovery and overall well-being.
