6 tips to get back behind the wheel after an accident

On Behalf of | Sep 28, 2022 | Car Accidents

After being involved in an accident in New Jersey, you might find that you’re afraid to get behind the wheel of a car again. With a few tips, you can slowly ease your way into driving so that you can maintain your independence on the road.

Be a passenger

One way that you can overcome your fear after car accidents is to get in the car as a passenger. You’ll be in the car but without having to control the steering wheel or manage the brake and the accelerator. Once you’re accustomed to observing the road again and looking for other vehicles and hazards, then it can be easier to start driving.

Review driving laws

Take another look through your area’s driving manual. Even if you’re a seasoned driver, reminding yourself of the laws that the majority of people follow may help curb any pre-driving anxiety.

Start with quiet streets

If possible, begin driving after an accident in a quiet neighborhood without a lot of traffic. You won’t need to drive at higher speeds because of the shorter roads in the neighborhood, and you can practice looking out for people and other cars that are backing out of driveways or coming toward you on the other side of the road.

Avoid freeways

Though you may eventually need to drive on the freeway, work your way up to it. After using neighborhood streets, take surface roads to get where you need to go. Start slow and drive shorter distances to get yourself reacclimated.

Use your seat belt

When you make choices you know will help keep you safe, you’ll give yourself peace of mind. Safety choices that can be made while driving include wearing your seatbelt at all times and maintaining eye contact with the road instead of using a mobile device or doing other things while in the car.

Take advantage of safety features

An option would be to purchase a vehicle that has more safety features. Some of these include a backup camera that shows you objects behind your car or one that has more airbags.

Although a car accident can sometimes make you dread driving again, there are ways that you can overcome this fear so that you don’t rely on others for transportation.
