Truckers mustn’t text or talk while driving

On Behalf of | Sep 9, 2016 | Truck Accidents

semi-trailer truck accidents can kill people who are just trying to go about their normal daily activities. Distracted semi-trailer truck drivers can cause these accidents simply because they aren’t focused on driving. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has some rules that forbid truckers from certain distractions when they are driving.

The rules specifically state that truckers mustn’t use cellphones to talk or text while they are driving. These rules don’t apply to hands-free systems that allow the trucker to talk on the phone using a speaker and microphone system that doesn’t require the trucker to hold a device or press more than one button.

Talk-to-text and similar technologies are often used by truckers who want to comply with these rules. Even when the trucker is using a hands-free means to communicate with family members and friends, he or she must ensure that his or her attention remains on driving instead of being focused on the conversation. Even becoming immersed in a conversation can have disastrous results when the person immersed is a trucker.

For people who are injured in semi-trailer truck crashes, determining if the trucker was talking or texting is often a top priority. This can sometimes be difficult, but it shouldn’t be impossible with the right tools.

The risks of truckers using cellphones to talk or text are considerable. There is never a good reason for a trucker to put other people on the road in danger just to have a conversation. If you were injured in a big rig accident in which trucker distraction was a factor, you might decide that you are going to seek compensation.
