Know your rights when health care professionals make errors

Residents of New Jersey rely on medical professionals to deliver quality, safe services from the pediatrician's office to the operating room. However, physicians and other health care professionals are still people, and people can make mistakes. Tragically, mistakes in the medical field can lead to serious consequences for the person being treated.

One type of mistake that occurs in the medical field is misdiagnosis. According to a BMJ Quality and Safety journal study, around 12 million Americans experience a misdiagnosis each year. Many of these issues relate to issues such as temporary misdiagnoses of minor illnesses such as strep throat. Even minor misdiagnoses can lead to incorrect treatment that inflames a situation or incorrect medication that can have uncomfortable or harmful side effects.

In some situations, a misdiagnosis can be tragic. There are cases, for example, where doctors fail to diagnose cancer in a timely manner. By the time the cancer is recognized by the medical community, it is sometimes too late for the best treatment options. In the worst cases, failure to diagnose a patient with serious diseases in time can lead to death.

On our delayed diagnosis page, we point out that every individual knows his or her body, and most people know when something is seriously wrong. Nonprofessionals may not be able to pinpoint the issue, but pushing matters with a physician or clinical staff when you know something is amiss is important.

For the best possible results, patients should work first with medical professionals in an aggressive fashion, even changing doctors or facilities if they feel needs aren't being met. If failure to diagnose or an incorrect diagnosis leads to injury or further damages, then legal options are available, letting patients seek compensation for those injuries.
