Simultaneous drunk driving and cell phone use in New Jersey crash

On Behalf of | Jun 27, 2012 | Drunk Driving Accidents

Auto accidents may be just that — accidents. But in many cases, there is much more to the story. For instance, was negligence involved? Was the crash alcohol-related? Did an individual or a group of individuals take action that specifically caused the car accident? How is liability determined for a multi-vehicle crash? These are questions that must be asked and answered when a car accident happens.

The sad truth is that crashes happen every day across the country; New Jersey is no exception. In a recent incident, a 29-year-old from New Vernon was arrested and charged with a slew of crimes in connection with his role in a three-car accident in Madison. Fortunately, in this case, no one was injured, but the circumstances of the crash should remind our readers in the Moorestown area that reckless or negligent behavior too often causes serious motor vehicle accidents.

It was reported that the man now facing charges was using his cell phone when the series of collisions occurred. Even worse, he was suspected of being drunk.

The case hasn’t yet been ruled on in court, but the suspect is now facing charges of DUI, using a cell phone while driving, refusing to submit to a breath test and driving without insurance.

While it was initially reported that no one was hurt in the accident, multi-vehicle crashes, regardless of how severe they are, often result in soft tissue injuries that intensify over time. What is thought to be a minor injury turns into a much worse one, requiring time off from work and medical attention. In such cases, the injured party is likely entitled to compensation for damages if another person’s negligence is shown to be the cause of the accident.

New Jersey residents who believe they may have suffered soft tissue damage because of a drunk driving accident will want to be aware of their options for filing a personal injury claim. Driving while under the influence is regarded as negligent, meaning there may be compensation available for injuries.
